Kiran to harp on united Andhra; Jaipal to lead T charge

HYDERABAD: The pro and anti-bifurcation camps will meet the Group of Ministers in Delhi on Monday to put forth their cases, in what could be a final showdown over division of Andhra Pradesh.

All eyes will be on chief minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy and Union urban development minister S Jaipal Reddy when they present their arguments in support of their respective regions along with Congress leaders from Telangana and Seemandhra, separately.

The meeting will coincide with an important Supreme Court hearing on a petition filed by Telugu Desam Party MLA P Keshav challenging the bifurcation of the state, an issue that has seen huge protests across coastal Andhra and Rayalaseema regions.

Positioning himself as the Samaikyandhra crusader, Kiran Kumar will advocate for a united-AP, while Jaipal Reddy will lead a delegation of Union ministers Sarve Satyanarayana and Balram Nayak (who hail from Telangana), to submit a note to the GoM in support of a separate Telangana state.

"It will be interesting because the rivalry between Kiran Reddy and Jaipal Reddy is not limited to Telangana issue. They are perceived to be political rivals," said a Congress leader.

The tussle between the CM and the Union minister came to the fore last year and turned murky with Kiran attacking Jaipal for doing "injustice to the state by diverting natural gas to Maharashtra" following which the latter was shifted from the petroleum ministry to the less significant science and technology portfolio. Kiran Reddy, whose open defiance has put the Congress high command in a fix, will meet the GoM at 12.30 pm. The Telangana Union ministers will meet the GoM at 10.30 am, following which the Seemandhra Union ministers would present their views.
