Tharoor said the matter had become a subject of "unnecessary public controversy based most part on misinformation, distortion and even sometimes outright lies" and that there should be a fair inquiry. He said he "was not going to engage in public polemics on what is still a very, very painful personal tragedy", and expected the media to have some consideration for the family.
He said he was looking for "closure" on the issue of the "sad demise" of his wife, but had been troubled by police's latest conclusion, which was very "surprising". He said he had a number of questions and concerns on the way the investigations were being carried out.
According to Times Now, the letter asks how police reached the conclusion that Sunanda had been murdered and whether this was based entirely on Dr Sudhir Gupta's report. It also asks why the viscera need to be sent abroad and whether the country didn't have a good enough lab to do the job.
Tharoor, who was undergoing a two-week Ayurveda treatment at a private clinic near here, was evading the media for the last three days after Delhi Police announced Sunanda's death was a murder. Even when he appeared before the media on Friday, he was unwilling to take any questions, saying that "this is not a press conference".
Reiterating that he and his family were "shocked" and wanted to know what happened to Sunanda, Tharoor hoped that his letter would "receive personal attention and he (Bassi) will discuss the questions raised by me with his investigating team".
Asserting that his silence was not "sinister", Tharoor said he was silent for the last one year to ensure that the investigation wasn't affected. But he also said that he has revealed more to the police than to the media.
Last November, Tharoor had written to Bassi, alleging that police had beaten up his help Narayan Singh in trying to make him confess to the MP's role in the murder.
