SC notice to CBI on disqualified MP’s bail plea

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Friday agreed to hear the bail plea of former Rajya Sabha member Rashid Masood, the first parliamentarian to be disqualified after conviction in a corruption case, and sought response from the CBI.

The 68-year-old politician was awarded four-year jail term on October 1, 2013 for fraudulently nominating undeserving candidates to MBBS seats from the central pool when he was health minister in the 11-month V P Singh government between 1990 and 1991.

A bench of Justices Dipak Misra and Prafulla C Pant sought response from the CBI on his bail plea on medical ground. Masood submitted that he was suffering from various ailments and he needed to get out of jail to avail proper treatment.

The petition, filed through advocate Archit Upadhaya, challenged the Delhi High Court order turning down the bail plea. The HC in November last year had declined bail saying allegations against Masood were very serious. However, it had directed the jail authority to provide necessary medical facilities to him.

Masood sought bail and suspension of his jail term contending that he had already suffered a lot during the 17-year-long trial and he was acutely diabetic, requiring administration of insulin several times a day.
