Is Congress fighting polls from Pakistan: Amit Shah

BHUBANESWAR/NEW DELHI: BJP president Amit Shah kept up the party's attack on Congress for raising questions about the December 31 Pakistani boat interception and asked whether the opposition party is contesting elections in Pakistan.

"Mujhe lagta hai Congress ko maloom nehin hai ki unko chunao Pakistan mein ladna hai yaa Hindustan mein. (I feel Congress doesn't know whether it would fight elections in Pakistan or India)," Shah said at a public meeting called "Mahasangram" rally here.

Shah asked Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi to restrain party spokespersons from making reckless remarks on sensitive matters, and said it is the main opposition's duty to boost the morale of security personnel rather than raising doubts on the government's efforts to curb terrorism.

Shah said the Indian coast guard's success in pinning down the Pakistani boat forced its crew to set it on fire and destroy it.

Pointing to the change in attitude under NDA, he said: "Exchange of fire still continues just like during UPA's. But now, India ends those by befitting reply," he said. "Goli aati hai. Gola jata hai. (Pakistan's bullets are replied by India's canons)," the BJP chief said.

Congress had on Monday criticized BJP asserting that citizens have the right to question the government. "We request the spokespersons of the BJP to stop making public relation events out of issues of national security," Congress spokesperson Randip Singh Surjewala said.

"It is our right as the opposition to question the conflicting reports in the media," Surjewala said though he also added that Congress commended the "valiant efforts" of the Coast Guard.

Earlier, Congress spokesman Ajoy Kumar had said, "Government should come clean on it. There is no evidence ... How can you say that a terrorist attack was prevented?"

Lauding the efforts of Indian intelligence agencies and Coast Guard, Shah said, "Ek bahut bada hadsa se desh ko bachaya hai. (Security forces saved the country from a big attack)," and added, during the Congress-led UPA terrorists managed to kill over 300 people in Mumbai.
