Govt must appeal against relief to Sonia’s PS: Subramanian Swamy

NEW DELHI: The NDA government must appeal against the recent Delhi high court order quashing the summons against Sonia Gandhi's private secretary Vincent George in the disproportionate assets case against him, BJP leader Subramanian Swamy has said in a letter to the Prime Minister.

A single judge bench of the high court had on December 22, quashed the summons issued by a trial court against George in the disproportionate assets case. A trial court on July 18, 2013 had issued the summons to George after rejecting the closure report of CBI into the decade old case against him.

"The CBI in 2001 during the earlier NDA government had registered a FIR against Sonia Gandhi's private secretary, Mr Vincent George, in a DA case for amassing wealth during his period as a PA to then Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi during 1985-89. Extensive raids were conducted and the CBI found incriminating evidences," Swamy said in his letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday.

"In 2004, the UPA came to power, and immediately pressured CBI to put this strong case in cold storage. About 12 years after registering of the said FIR, CBI was compelled to file a closure report and thus enabled several relatives of Mr Vincent George to flee the country," Swamy has said in his letter.

He alleged that one of George's relatives was facing CBI probe in connection to money trails of Dawood Ibrahim. The relative was arrested for sheltering aides of Dawood in a Delhi guesthouse, Swamy alleged, and claimed that CBI found evidence of financial transactions between George and his relative.

The CBI had filed a closure report, despite such evidences, Swamy alleged. "Trial court in Delhi dealing with the CBI case issued summons to Vincent George in this DA case rejecting CBI's dubious move to file the report of closure in the registered case. Mr George then appealed to the Delhi High Court in a quash petition," Swamy said.

On December 22, the Delhi high court stayed the summons "after CBI took a favourable stand in Delhi high court," Swamy said. "Unfortunately the CBI counsel continued the UPA's stand even after our NDA government came back to power," he has alleged.

"I therefore urge you, in keeping with our party's election promise of providing a clean government, to direct the CBI to appeal against the Delhi high court verdict with fresh instructions to the CBI counsels, who still carry the brief of the previous UPA government to save the corrupt," Swamy has said.
