Why can't Shiv Sena buy plot for Balasaheb Thackeray's memorial, son Jaidev asks

MUMBAI: Jaidev Thackeray dropped a bombshell on the Shiv Sena by opposing a Balasaheb Thackeray memorial at the Shivaji Park grounds on Sunday.

"There is no need for a big statue or a huge memorial in the late Balasaheb's honour at Shivaji Park. Maidans and public parks should not be encroached upon," he said at a press conference on Sunday.

That Jaidev, the son of the late Balasaheb Thackeray, should cho-ose the first death anniversary to kick up a fresh row on the memorial has sent shockwaves through the Sena rank and file. The Sena has been keen on setting up a permanent memorial at Shivaji Park, given the late party patriarch's emotional link with the iconic park from where he addressed the Sena's inaugural meeting in 1966.

As of now, the party has settled for a landscape garden at Shivaji Park, set up by a Sena-Bharatiya Janata Party-ruled BMC.

Jaidev said those in the Sena who attained political stardom because of Balasaheb should buy space in Mumbai for his memorial. "Swanky resorts have been built. Then why can't they buy a plot in Mumbai for Balasaheb's memorial?" he asked.

He suggested that open space in the precincts of the mayor's official bungalow at Shivaji Park could be considered for the memorial.

"I plan to begin my innings in Maharashtra's public life. I want to fulfill my father's dreams," he said. But he ruled out launching a political outfit.
