Compensation to flood-hit farmers a cruel joke: Warring

Muktsar: Gidderbaha MLA Amarinder Singh Raja Warring of Congress once again gate-crashed the Sangat Darshan organised by Punjab chief minister Parkash Singh Badal in Muktsar district on Friday. He alleged that Punjab government had played a cruel joke on farmers, whose crop was damaged due to floods during monsoon, by giving them meagre amounts as compensation.

He came prepared with a garland of low-value cheques to be presented to the CM during the Sangat Darshan at Chak Giljewala village, but was not allowed to do so. He termed the Sangat Darshan as "Akali darshan" and wrote a letter to lodge his protest.

Warring said he wanted to highlight the state government's insensitivity towards the flood-hit farmers as they were being given cheques of amounts varying from Rs 62 to a few hundreds as compensation. He had pinned the cheques on his clothes when he came to the venue.

When prevented from meeting Badal, Warring said it was a mockery of democracy that an elected representative was not allowed to meet the CM at a public function. He also alleged that the state government had provided a compensation of Rs 2 lakh to an influential Akali leader having more than 100 acres of land, but Rs 62 and Rs 63 or other lower amounts to those who had suffered immensely due to floods and consequent waterlogging.

However, Badal hit back at Warring, calling his tactics a gimmick and adding that Congress leaders only played spoilsport and did not want the welfare of people.

Muktsar SSP Surjit Singh said, "The MLA was asked to have an audience with the CM along with three-four persons, but he wanted to do so with his 100-odd followers. As the chief minister did not have much time, a large number of people with legislator Warring could not have been allowed to storm into the programme."
