Two more child abuse incidents reported in Pondy; number of Pocso cases rises to 55

PUDUCHERRY: Two more minor girls have been sexually abused in the Union territory of Puducherry taking the number of cases booked under the Prevention of Children from Sexual Offenses (Pocso) Act to 55 since 2012.

Police arrested two persons and launched a hunt for another.

Police arrested a 54-year-old man working at a tea stall on Wednesday on charges of repeatedly raping his 14-year-old niece.

The man was staying with her parents and younger sister in the same house. Her mother was also working at the same tea stall.

The victim told the Child Welfare Committee that her uncle, P Soundararajan, had been raping her for the past five months.

The committee referred the case to the Mudaliarpet police who booked Soundararajan under Section 4 of Pocso Act and arrested him.

In another case, police arrested a 33-year-old woman on Wednesday for her involvement in the rape of her 12-year-old daughter by her lover.

They launched a hunt for her lover, who was absconding. Police said S Selvi alias Stella, 33, was living with her daughter after she was separated from her husband.

She developed an affair with the proprietor of a snacks shop. The man, identified as K Jayakumar, used to visit her house often and in course of time Selvi pressurized her daughter to yield to desires of her lover.

Jayakumar raped the minor girl on several occasions in the presence of her mother. Police booked Jayakumar and Selvi under various sections of the Pocso Act.

The police records show 28 cases were registered in 2013 and all the cases were solved. Twenty one cases were reported in 2014 (till November) and 18 cases were solved.

CWC chairperson Vidyaa Ramkumar said of the 55 cases, 26 were sexual harassment cases, 12 were kidnap and rape cases, 12 were aggravated and sexually penetrated cases and five were illegal trafficking cases in which the victims were rescued from brothels.

The committee has also transferred nine cases to child welfare committees in other states.

It has prevented 13 child marriages since 2012. It has rescued 12 missing and runaway children and transferred them to their respective states. It has offered counselling to 25 school dropout children and admitted them to various schools with the help of education department.

It has admitted 705 boys and 633 girls at child care institutions for shelter and education during the period. As many as 206 boys and 200 girls were later discharged from the institutes and restored to their parents. It has issued temporary custody order for adoption process to 72 children.
