Jal satyagraha day 18: Protestors wait for govt response

INDORE: Farmers affected by Omkareshwar dam project demanding adequate compensation have refused to give up their jal satyagraha or take treatment for infections as advised state government's medical team. Jal satyagraha by project affected farmers in Gogalgaon village of Khandwa district entered the 18 day on Tuesday.

Most farmers are suffering from washerman-foot disease and skin on their feet has peeled off and have started bleeding. "Medical team had visited the protest site for health inspection of farmers," said NBA leader Chittaroopa Palit, adding, farmers have refused to come out of water till their demands for compensation of land against land are fulfilled.

She said in 2012 jal satyagraha had ended after 17 days of protest, when chief minister announced a special package of Rs 225 crore. This time after 18 days of protest, government has not taken any initiative to discuss the issue or solve the matter relating to their rehablitation.

Reacting to a statement issued by statement government on Monday, indirectly alleging protestors for not initiating dialogue for resolution of the issue, Palit said, "Government statement had admitted that we had a meeting on April 23. During the meeting, minister had assured to discuss the issue with chief minister and take some decision, we are still waiting."
