PM Narendra Modi promises better life for farmers

BENGALURU: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday sought to dispel the anti-farmer image his government has acquired over the controversial land bill even while hailing the Sangh parivar's stand on cow slaughter.

"The farmer is my strength. I have lived among farmers, I know their pain and I promise I will help them get a better life," Modi told a well-attended public rally, held as part of the two-day BJP national executive.

Attacking the Congress, Modi said, "The farmer with two bighas of land sells a part of it to pay a bribe for his son to become a chapraasi (peon) or a driver. This is the state that governments in the past have reduced him to, over 60 years. I am here to change all that."

Modi, who earlier participated in a brain-storming session to discuss the new land acquisition Bill, and how to "correct" the perception of anti-farmer image created by the opposition parties, also listed his government's plans to revive the farm sector. He said a "four-coloured" revolution signifying the shades of the Tricolour in agriculture, power, marine and milk production was in the offing.

"Our national flag has three colours, besides the blue of the Ashok Chakra. I want to bring in a four-coloured revolution. We are aiming for a second green revolution. Saffron means energy and so I want to bring power revolution. We also want to bring about a white revolution for increasing milk production and a blue revolution for increasing our sea power by promoting ports and strengthen fishermen," Modi said.

Supporting the Sangh parivar's stand on cow slaughter, he said it was beneficial to farmers. "What do people who are making political fodder out of farmers' issues know about animal wealth? It is as important as land, and we are protecting that," he added.

In the same tenor, the PM stressed on the need for technology to help the farmer gain good returns from the land. The Centre, he said, had taken a revolutionary step to digitize land records and introduce soil health cards which would give the farmer a good idea of what ailed the land and boundaries of their fields.

Reviving his digital India vision mantra, Modi said his government will take the country towards mobile governance. "Where there is mobile governance, there is good governance," Modi said.

Outlining the achievements during the 10-month rule, the PM said, "We understand the people of this country have great hope in our government. We will definitely fulfill all their aspirations."

On black money, Modi said, "The Congress taunted us on black money asking when it'll come back. But in the first Cabinet meeting itself we decided to form an SIT, which is reporting regularly on its investigations. I have also asked world leaders to help me control the problem by providing me with information."
