Girl killed in fresh tremors in Bharatpur

ALWAR: Fresh tremors claimed the life of an 8-year-old girl while left eight other children injured in Bharatpur's Nadbai area on Sunday. Enjoying their day off from the school, the children were playing in the deceased's house's temporary portion made of stone slabs when it crumbled due to tremors.

Among the injured are the girl's two siblings and the children living in the neighborhood, all aged between 5 and 11 years. It is believed to be the only causality caused by the earthquake in the state over the past two days since tremors are being felt, particularly in northern and eastern Rajasthan.

According to police, the deceased is identified as Nisha Kumari, was playing with eight other children at their house in Raunija village, some 160 km from Jaipur.

"The family members were in another part of the house. As the portion in which the children were playing was made of stone slabs. It collapsed at about 12.43 pm when the tremors were felt," said a police officer.

A villager Bijendra Singh said that on hearing a loud thud, the family members and villagers rushed there and found Nisha completely buried. The other children had sustained injuries as stones fell over them.

By the time police and district administration officials arrived at the spot, the villagers had rescued the injured children and taken Nisha's body out of the debris. While two children were rushed to a government hospital in Bharatpur due to their comparatively serious condition, others are undergoing treatment at a Nadbai hospital.

A district administration official said during preliminary enquiry it has come up that the portion of house had already been rendered weak during the tremors on Saturday. "When the tremors on Sunday caused the structure to fall," said the officer.

On Saturday, the rooftop of a warehouse crumbled due to the earthquake. However, no loss of human life was reported.
