Red-eye flights: Fly post-midnight and save money this summer

NEW DELHI: Domestic travellers in India will now be able to fly in the post-midnight to dawn hours and save some money. Termed "red eye" in the west -- alluding to the sleepy and watery eyed passengers getting off them, -- these flights are very popular as they are substantially cheaper than day time flights.

Jet Airways will start three red eyes this summer. A Mumbai-Delhi flight has been added that will take off at 2:30 am and land at 4:35 am. A Delhi-Kolkata flight will take off at 2:10 am and reach the destination at 4:25 am. And, a Delhi-Pune connection will leave at 3:20 am and land at 5:30 am. A Jet official said these flights would be cheaper than the day time connection but did not specify the discount.

Jet introduced these red eyes while adding 31 daily flights on its domestic schedule from this summer. Domestic red eye flights have been introduced after a almost a decade.

Before 2005 (when low cost carriers IndiGo, SpiceJet and GoAir were launched) Air India used to offer domestic legs of its international flights for very low fares. For instance, Delhi-Mumbai-London and Hong Kong-Mumbai-Delhi flights would offer the domestic segments for as low as Rs 2,000 to Rs 3,000. These flights were a big hit with budget domestic flyers. After the launch of budget airlines, domestic red eyes became irrelevant.

The Tata-AirAsia JV airline, which started operations last year, was planning to launch domestic red eyes from Delhi this summer. However, it has put those flights on hold. "We will take a decision on them only after the government finalizes the new rules for Indian airlines to fly abroad," said a senior AirAsia India official.

So while AirAsia India has delayed these flights, legacy carrier Jet Airways has started them. Depending on the success of these flights, other airlines may also follow suit and bring India at par with the west as far as flying cheap at night is concerned.
