The defense spokesman, quoting Lt.General Subrata Saha, GOC of the Army's 15 Corps, said, "The encounter was triggered when the troops got to know that one Lashkar-e-Taiba commander was taking shelter in a residential house in the village. The slain Lashkar commander seems to be the part of the group of terrorists who were on way to infiltrate into this side of Kashmir in a couple of days."
After the Army established an effective cordon, the soldiers first evacuated the occupants of the house to safety. When the holed-up terrorist realized that the residents of the house had been evacuated, he opened fire upon the soldiers resulting in a fierce fire-fight. The retaliation by the Army resulted in the killing of the terrorist, while one Army jawan received a gunshot wound, and was evacuated.
The body of the terrorist was recovered along with an AK-47 rifle, the General revealed. Based on a study of the recoveries from the slain terrorist, it was assessed that he was preparing to receive a group, he added.
