Supriya Sule comes out of father’s shadow

NEW DELHI: Taking on the government over price rise in Lok Sabha, NCP leader Supriya Sule on Wednesday seemed to have come out of the tall shadow of her father Sharad Pawar. In a calm and composed rebuttal of allegations from BJP leaders that the government had inherited price rise from previous dispensation, Sule argued that it should talk about inheriting a record production of food grains, launch of PSLV, induction of INS Vikrant and Jammu-Katra rail link—all of which have been inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Sule spoke largely in reference to a speech made by BJP leader Anurag Thakur in defence of the government. "Arun Jaitley and Anurag Thakur have said that they have inherited inflation (from the previous government). But then inheritance was not just in case of inflation, it was also in case of INS Vikrant, PSLV3 launch, Kashmir hydel project, and Jammu-Katra rail link," the NCP leader said.

She further pointed out how Jaitley had said there is no need to panic over inflation as there was record production of food grains. "This is again our legacy. You couldn't have come up with such production in 40 days," said Sule.

Reacting to government's response over inflation, Sule said the government is only throwing statistics at people. "Sushmaji (Sushma Swaraj) used to speak very well. When she was in the opposition, she used to say poor are not fed by statistics, but grains. I hope you remember it."

She also took on the government over its insistence that rail fare hike had been mooted by UPA and NDA only implemented it. "Two wrongs don't make a right. If we committed a mistake, you could have corrected it. Why did you go ahead with the fare hike?" asked Sule.

Accusing the government of keeping electoral considerations in mind while formulating policies, Sule said, "You are saying you would think about gas price review after three months. Are you waiting for Maharashtra and Haryana elections to get over?"
