Most cases of communal violence in Uttar Pradesh

NEW DELHI: Uttar Pradesh reported 247 cases of communal violence last year, out of the 823 such incidents recorded across the country. As many as 133 people, including 77 in UP, were killed in communal clashes and 2,269 injured.

Ranking after Uttar Pradesh in terms of number of communal incidents reported were Maharashtra (88), Madhya Pradesh (84), Karnataka (73) and Gujarat 68.


The data was put out in a reply given by minister of state for home Kiren Rijiju to a question in Rajya Sabha on Wednesday.


UP witnessed communal riots in Muzaffarnagar and adjoining areas in August-September last year. Many of the deaths (77) and injured people (360) reported from UP relate to these riots.


During April-June, the largest number of communal violence incidents were reported from Uttar Pradesh (32), followed by Maharashtra (26), Rajasthan (18) and Madhya Pradesh (17).


A total of 149 such incidents were reported during the same period of this year, Rijiju said in separate data.
