Geological Survey of India to set up 'core' library at Hyderabad

NAGPUR: Here is a revolutionary step towards sharing of available information and generating more from the existing knowledge about various mineral reserves in the country. The Geological Survey of India (GSI) will be setting up a National 'Core' Library (NCL) at the GSI's southern regional headquarters at Hyderabad in the near future.

While exploring for ore of any mineral, drilling is undertaken to remove a sample of the ore. This sample comes out as a huge cylindrical block, which in geological terminology is called the 'core'. The survey already has preserved samples at such libraries in the six regional headquarters for future reference by GSI personnel. "However, now the NCL will be open to the entire country, which means that researchers from different universities as well as national research institutions, or for that matter even private bodies, can have access to these for any future research. GSI will make this available free of cost, with a rider that any new information generated on the mineral will be given back to GSI too," said GSI director general Sudesh Wadhawan.

This in no way means that the new research findings cannot be used or published by the researcher. However, GSI too wants to be kept in the loop by sharing the information, so that it can put the information in public domain at national as well as international levels.

The core libraries are otherwise also supposed to be national repositories, but they were until now accessible only to GSI and allied agencies. The national library will be a step forward in better R&D in the field of existing mineral wealth of the nation.

"More science will now emerge from the same repositories when persons from various fields look at them from their own perspective. It will also help us generate more data and help us gear up for the forthcoming first-ever international congress on geology to be held in India in 2020," said Wadhawan.
