The spokesperson of chief electoral officer (CEO), Bihar, said on Saturday that security and civil personnel were being dispatched to their assigned polling locations and most of them have already reached their respective destinations. As many as 8,582 electronic voting machines (EVMs) will be used in the sixth and last phase of the polls in Bihar.
He said seven units of mounted military police (MMP) would be deployed along with 370 motorcycles and 36 motorized boats. Over 2,000 hamlets and 3,393 polling stations have been identified as critical. Police seized Rs56.34 crore, 731 illegal firearms and 2,364 live cartridges besides over a tonne of explosives and 12,000 detonators so far.
Meanwhile, a BJP delegation submitted a memorandum addressed to the state's CEO on Saturday, demanding deployment of central paramilitary forces (CPMFs) at all the polling booths in the six parliamentary constituencies, including Siwan. The delegation also demanded that CCTV cameras be installed at every booth, alleging that instances of booth capturing surfaced in the state in the last five phases covering 34 constituencies. The delegation included the party's state general secretary Surajnanadan Kushwaha (MLC), Nawal Kishore Yadav (MLC) and its vice-president Sanjay Mayukh, among others.
However, the focus of the BJP delegation was more on Siwan where Hena Shahab, wife of former MP Mohammad Shahabuddin, is contesting on the RJD ticket. Om Prakash Yadav, who was elected as an independent in 2009, is the BJP candidate against her. The BJP maintained that Shahabuddin was shifted to Gaya jail on the EC directive, but his lawyer has sought his presence at Siwan for court-related matter. The BJP has insinuated that Shahabuddin could influence the polling process on May 12.
