State election commissioner Subardhan said, "The elections will be held in three phases on June 18, June 21 and June 24 in all the districts, except Hardwar where it will be held afterwards. All the preparations have been done at the village level in all the districts."
Counting will be held on June 27. The nominations of contestants for all the seats will be accepted between June 2 and June 5. Cancellation of nomination will be allowed on June 10, he said.
With the state government issuing a notification announcing the panchayat election, the model code of conduct has come into force.
All the arrangements like ballot-boxes, manpower and security personnel have been made. Explaining the breakup of the posts at village and block level, Subardhan said, "The election will be for 7,657 posts of pradhan and deputy pradhan, 49,337 posts of gram panchayat members, 3,054 posts of block development committee members and 12 zila panchayat chairman posts."
Thousands of contestants are expected to fight the panchayat polls which bring a festival type atmosphere in villages.
Holding the Panchayat election was a contentious issue for the Congress government which had delayed it on account of the general elections. The matter had even reached the Uttarakhand high court and later, the Supreme Court, which ordered the Uttarakhand government to hold the elections in June after the Lok Sabha polls.
