BJP slams Rawat for seeking extra rehab funds

DEHRADUN: Chief minister Harish Rawat's fresh demand of Rs 4000 crore for reconstruction and rehabilitation works in Uttarakhand has drawn flak from BJP, which demanded a special audit of the money spent on all these projects in the past one year.

Breaking his silence after the Congress rout in the state, Rawat said the UPA government had sanctioned Rs 8,000 crore for rehabilitation works in Rudraprayag, Chamoli and Uttarkashi. The demand for additional funds has been based on the reassessment of the gigantic developmental projects planned to rebuild tragedy-hit districts, state government sources said.

This is Rawat's first demand from the Modi government.

Reacting to this, BJP leader Prakhash Pant said, "Congress has lost the faith of the people here as it failed in conducting the Char Dham Yatra and tackling the post-disaster situation efficiently. So, pitching for fresh funds is unjustified."

The state BJP in-charge, Tirath Singh Rawat, said, "The state government claims to have spent hundreds of crores on rehabilitation but it cannot be confirmed whether the help actually reached the ground level. Hundreds of villagers are yet to get relief."

He said, "The CM has claimed publicly that he cleared over 2500 government orders and most of which are related to relief and rehabilitation. So, the special audit is mandatory to know where and how the entire money was spent after the tragedy." Congress sources claimed that the CM had hastened the process of ex-gratia payment to hundreds of people whose houses were damaged in the flash floods.
