CPM urges EC to bar Amit Shah's poll meetings

NEW DELHI: CPM has asked the Election Commission to bar BJP leader Amit Shah from addressing any poll meetings.

While an FIR has been filed against Shah for allegedly giving an inflammatory speech, CPM sent footage of the BJP leader's speech to the EC and said it was not only a violation of the model code of conduct but also a criminal act of spreading hatred between communities.

CPM said the video clips in its possession showed Shah allegedly stating that the "elections in Uttar Pradesh, especially in western UP, is an election for honour, for seeking revenge for the insult, and for teaching a lesson to those who committed injustice".

In the same speech, CPM said, Shah justified the Muzaffarnagar riots, claiming it was for "security" and "honour of women". "This not just another election. This is the time to avenge the insult meted out to our community. This election will be a reply to those who have been ill-treating our mothers and sisters," Shah allegedly said.

Shah also allegedly said, "People who were beggars have become arabpatis running butcherkhanas (slaughterhouses). BJP is going to stop this. Please understand what it means."

CPM said the video footage also showed that Shah allegedly said a "man can live without food or sleep. He can live when he's thirsty and hungry. But when he's insulted, he can't live. We must seek revenge for the insult heaped on us." Shah said with one vote, both UPA and Mulayam Singh Yadav could be brought down.
