Trinamool's Hooghly president Tapan Dasgupta lapped up the allegation and made a complaint to the Election Commission against Mitra. Taken aback with such a complaint, Mitra showed the train ticket to Kolkata to justify his coming to the railway station. The Chinsurah Police reached the spot based on the Trinamool complaint and took the BJP candidate to the SDO Chinsurah's office. Mitra was kept waiting there for some time before the police escorted him to his Babuganj home in Hooghly.
"I have the ticket with me. As soon as I reached the Chinsurah station, some people gathered around me and started asking me about my election campaign. While I was responding to them, few bystanders complained that I was distributing money to voters," Mitra said.
The incident sent ripples in Kolkata where BJP state president Rahul Sinha was holding a press meet. "Chandan Mitra was alone. It won't be hard to find out if he had distributed the money. I would appeal to the EC to check the fingerprints on the currency notes. If the complaint is found wrong, the EC should take steps against those who slapped false charges," Sinha said. The BJP state president came down heavily on the Trinamool for making personal attack on BJP prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi and even BJP candidate from Birbhum Joy Banerjee. "We will file a defamation suit, the day Trinamool Congress does it against Narendra Modi," Sinha said.
Hooghly DM Manmeet Nanda told the media that he has asked the police to look into the complaint. However, the EC officials said that an FIR has been lodged against an unknown person.
