PM, Narendra modi up the ante

JABALPUR: A usually reticent Prime Minister Manmohan Singh was at his aggressive best at a Congress rally in Jabalpur where he unleashed an attack on Modi, without really naming him. Singh said "a big leader is out to distort history and is propagating falsehood ." He cautioned voters to stay away from those indulging in hate politics.

Singh surprised his audience by a change in tone. Over last few months, the PM said he had noticed a spate of negative brand of politics and also observed the level of political debate has touched a new low. Urging people to identify those behind it, he declared the beginning has been made by "some over-enthusiastic leaders in the BJP".

"Getting hyper is fine, if one were to spell out a development agenda to be followed once in saddle, however the enthusiasm shown by BJP is limited to backbiting, belittling others and making personal accusations," Singh said. How far can such a party be trusted and where would it lead the country if voted to power, deserves serious thought, he said.

Warming up to the subject, Singh made what seemed like a near direct attack on Modi. Referring to Modi, he said, "Once he got so carried away in Congress bashing that he ended up railing against someone who is highly respected in his own party," Singh said.

Anyone holding a constitutional office or aspiring to hold one, needs to measure and weigh each and every word before speaking, Singh cautioned.

Alluding to Modi's attack on the Gandhi family, Singh said this leader has made it a habit to pick on one particular family in Congress. Advising him to compare the achievements of this family with those made by the BJP stalwarts, Singh said the saffron party suffered from a paucity of good leaders and its contribution in nation building has been nil.
