The fisher folk were optimist post bilateral talks between Tamil Nadu and Sri Lankan fishermen on March 24. During the meeting, Indian fishermen had requested for 83 fishing days in a year to fish in Sri Lankan waters.
The Sri Lankan fishermen leaders had said they would get back after discussing their fishers. However, fishermen venturing from the region into the Palk Strait of late found that the Sri Lankan navy had strengthened patrolling along Katchatheevu.
It is believed that Sri Lankan fishermen leaders met President Maithripala Sirisena on Thursday urging the government to act tough on the Indian fishermen trespassing into Sri Lanka's territorial waters on grounds that they are destroying the country's marine wealth and livelihood of local fishermen.
