Farmer dies of heart attack after crop loss

CHANDIGARH/HISAR: A 58-year-old farmer, Ram Singh, died of heart attack on Thursday apparently after rain and hailstorm damaged his crop in Hisar's Bandaheri village. This is the sixth such instance in less than a week in Haryana.

Singh's son, Suresh, 30, said his father was under stress after 70% of the crop over 10 acres of land was damaged due to rain.

"In the morning, he went to the fields and later I got a call from a labourer that my father had fainted. I rushed there and took him to hospital, but the doctors declared him dead."

Singh's family said he had borrowed Rs 1 lakh from a friend, but had returned it a few days back. "He was worried because he could see the rains had damaged crops worth at least Rs 2 lakh," Suresh added.

Another 41-year-old farmer, Sanjiv Sharma, died under similar circumstances in a village near Panchkula on Wednesday soon after returning from his fields.

"Sanjiv could not wake up after a nap," said his younger brother Praveen Kumar. The family cremated his body on Thursday without informing police or administration.

Kumar said Sanjiv was tense after about 70% loss to his wheat crop over seven acres of land. "Sanjiv owned just two acres while rest of the land was taken on contract," said his brother.

He said his brother had a debt of around Rs 4 lakh, including Rs 3 lakh from a nationalized bank. "He had taken loan in February when he had married his elder daughter. He was hoping for a bumper crop this time but heavy rains shattered his dreams."

Police were doubtful over claims of 55-year-old farmer Ram Chander's family that he had committed suicide in Bhiwani due to crop failure.

Chander had hung himself by a tree. A suicide note found in his pocket made no mention of crop failure.

Chander's uncle Bhoop Singh said his nephew owned 10 acres and was under mental stress after 50% of his wheat crop was damaged due to rain and hailstorm. He added Chander was from a well-off family and had no major debts.

"We have recovered the suicide note, which makes no mention of crop loss," said a police officer.
