"It was difficult for businessmen to work in Haryana. There was perennial water and power crisis during the INLD-BJP combine's rule. The farmers suffered a great deal. But ever since the Congress took over the reins, there is social peace and economic development here," she said.
Sonia said that earlier Haryana farmers never got their due for the acquisition of their land. "There was no proper formula to compensate for land acquisition. Very low rates were given to farmers. But things changed under the Congress rule and god compensation is paid for any land acquired," she said.
"There is a leader who is talking about running the state government from jail. These leaders do not want power for serving the people or their welfare and development of the state. They are simply hungry for power and want to grab it at any cost," she said.
She also trained her guns at the NDA government and Prime Minister Narendra Modi while referring to Mahatama Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS) launched by the previous UPA government. "Now, the pro-rich BJP is trying to end the same programme to weaken the poor people," she said while cautioning people not to fall in their trap.
"Haryana is a land of farmers, brave soldiers and hard working women so the Congress has always given importance to their welfare and progress. The UPA government gave the country 'one-rank one-pension' scheme to the country. In future too, the Congress will work for the welfare of people. When we make a promise we fulfill it. Your future under the Congress government is safe and bright," she added.
Prior to Sonia's speech, Chaudhary recounted the number of schemes implemented during the tenure of his father-in-law and former chief minister Bansi Lal and current CM Bhupinder Singh Hooda.
