Online drinking game goes viral globally

LONDON: A bizarre drinking game that involves eating live fish has gone viral online and has Britain seriously worried.

"Neknominating" is a new global craze that involves people filming themselves 'necking' alcohol, then nominating a friend to do the same, egging each other on to do more extreme and outlandish feats each time. Neknomination is played via sites such as Facebook and Twitter. It is thought to have originated in Australia. Participants are dared to down a pint of alcohol while performing a stunt, before uploading a video of them completing the challenge and electing another 'Neknominee'.

British authorities are inundated with calls of goldfish being eaten as part of the drinking 'game' and after an Irish teenager Jonny Byrne, 19, drowned by jumping into a river on Saturday night while playing the game. His father has appealed to other teenagers to stop playing the game.

The Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals said, "We are condemning an alarming new trend involving fish being eaten as part of a bizarre drinking game. There has been a spike of calls to us in the last week all describing videos of people drinking a shot of alcohol with a fish inside."

RSPCA wildlife scientist Nicola White said, "We are extremely concerned about this shocking new trend. We have had quite a few similar cases reported to us in a very short space of time - but this could be just the tip of the iceberg as there's probably many more we have not been told about."
