Onion prices up 21.95% at Lasalgaon; supply still low

NASHIK: The average wholesale onion prices at the country's largest onion market at Lasalgaon Agriculture Produce Market Committee (APMC) increased by 21.95% to Rs 5,000 a quintal on Friday due to a rise in the demand and comparatively short supply.

In district APMCs, the average wholesale onion prices were recorded in the range of Rs 4,951 to Rs 5,000 a quintal on Friday, against the range of Rs 4,100 to Rs 4,551 a quintal on Thursday.

In retail markets across Nashik, better quality onions were sold in the range of Rs 50 to Rs 60 a kg on Friday.

The average wholesale price of onions at Lasalgaon APMC increased by Rs 900 (21.95%) to Rs 5,000 a quintal on Friday, against Rs 4,100 a quintal on Thursday. The minimum and maximum prices were recorded at Rs 2,000 and Rs 5,500 a quintal, respectively. Around 4,000 quintals of onions were auctioned at Lasalgaon on Friday.

In Pimpalgaon APMC, the average wholesale onion price increased by Rs 400 (8.78%) to Rs 4,951 a quintal on Friday, against Rs 4,551 a quintal on Thursday. The minimum and maximum prices were recorded at Rs 2,300 and Rs 5,401 a quintal. Around 4,200 quintals of onions were auctioned at Pimpalgaon on Friday.

According to market sources, although the arrival of fresh kharif crop has been increasing gradually and reached 4,000 quintals a day at Lasalgaon, against 2,000 quintals last week, the supply still remains lower than the demand. The rates will remain high until the kharif crop arrival is regularised to fulfill the demands at the market. The shortage was underscored with farmers not bringing in their produce to the market this week due to Diwali. The arrival of onions is expected to increase from next week, with the daily arrival expected to reach 10,000 quintals a day by the weekend. Prices, too, may come down comparatively as the supply increases.
