"I dare the president of Congress to visit the fields and farms of any village in India. She can't even tell which crop is wheat and which is paddy," Badal said at a rally in Dhuri.
He drew comparisons between Sonia and his father, chief minister Parkash Singh Badal, saying: "Mere pita ne ek ek gaaon dekha hai...kya kabhi Sonia Gandhi ne aisa kuch kiya hai (My father has been to every village, while Sonia has done nothing of this sort)."
The Congress reacted by linking Badal's remarks to Union minister Giriraj Singh's recent controversial statement that if Rajiv Gandhi had married a Nigerian woman instead of a "fair-skinned" Sonia, the Congress would not have accepted her as their leader. "They have no shame. Recently, their leader made a racist remark. We expose non-fulfillment of schemes, unemployment and drug abuse crisis. We do not personally attack them on their culture," said Punjab PCC chief Partap Singh Bajwa.
Sonia had recently announced a visit to Punjab to protest against the land-acquisition bill. The visit was later postponed.
