A dedicated Facebook page with title 'Hole in Whole NH-21' that was launched this month is gaining popularity. Photos are also being shared on various mobile apps. People are expressing their anger for the state government and the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) by commenting and sharing the photos.
A resident of Mandi, Purushotam Sharma, said that condition of NH-21 had not improved in last three years and potholes as deep as 15cm had become commuters' nightmare. "Enraged, people are expressing their anger on the social media. Funny pictures of NH-21 have now reached in every smart phone in Himachal," he said.
Peak summer season in Himachal is going to start in May and traffic burden on NH-21 is going to double in next couple of weeks. Thousands of tourists will be heading to Kullu-Manali and Mandi but highway is not ready to take this traffic load.
Local residents have also been claiming that a large number of accidents happened on NH-21 during the last two years due to potholes. Most of the victims were motorcycle riders. Recently Mandi deputy commissioner had issued a notice to NHAI under section 304 of IPC. Though the repair work on highway has started, but residents claim it is just eyewash and public works department is just filling the holes temporarily.
Most of the stretches between Mandi and Kiratpur are in bad shape. According to drivers who use Chandigarh-Manali highway regularly, they are forced to drive slowly on the road to avoid damage to vehicle and injury to the passengers and the time of journey has increased by at least two hours.
