Amarinder had said recently that Rahul should not take over as the Congress president at this juncture and that Sonia was best suited to tackle the issues of the party in this hour of crisis. Many partymen wondered if he would visit Rahul during the trip.
Sources said Punjab Congress leaders were told about Rahul's visit by Shakeel Ahmed, in-charge of party's Punjab affairs, around 11am on Tuesday and by that time Capt was already nearing Amritsar. The former chief minister was the chief guest at a private college, besides he planned a visit to the local grain markets to look at the wheat procurement. Incidentally, Rahul too was taking stock of a grain market, first in Sirhind and then in Khanna.
Later in the day, Amarinder clarified that it was he who had alerted Rahul about the condition of farmers in the state due to issues like faulty wheat procurement. He claimed the Gandhi family scion had even acknowledged this with a reply, "Thanks for the update."
Amarinder had recently said, "I have always maintained that Sonia is our leader the way she has been for the past 16 years and she has done a great job. Everyone has confidence in her. As far as Rahul ji is concerned, he is our vice-president, let him carry on and learn the business. Eventually, he will emerge as the leader."
Punjab Congress president Partap Singh Bajwa, who was also in Amritsar on Tuesday morning, rushed to receive Rahul in Ambala, where he arrived by train and later reached Sirhind by road.
