India urged to evacuate 50 Vietnamese nationals stranded in Nepal

CHENNAI: Vietnam on Tuesday sought India's help to evacuate 50 of its nationals stranded in earthquake-hit Nepal.

"About 50 Vietnamese tourists are currently stranded in Nepal. We are now trying to bring them back to Vietnam," Vietnam's envoy to India Ton Sinh Thanh told reporters after the inauguration of the VFS Global Vietnam Visa Application Centre here.

Lauding India's rescue efforts in Nepal, the envoy said: "We have urged the Indian government to allow Vietnamese nationals to get on board the Indian rescue aircraft. They can come to India and then go to Vietnam,'' he said.

Replying to a query on whether Vietnam would join the rescue operations, he said his country did not have the capabilities, unlike India.

Speaking about China raising concerns about India's presence in Vietnam for oil exploration, he said, "Indian companies are operating in the sovereign territorial waters of Vietnam, and China need not be bothered."

Asked why Vietnam chose Chennai for their visa processing services, he said it was an ideal location and it was a dynamic and flourishing city. "The tourism sector is a significant contributor to Vietnam's net revenue along with the oil and gas industry," he said.
