Fresh earthquake experienced in Jharkhand

RANCHI: Aftershocks of a strong earthquake measuring 5.1 on the Richter scale which hit Nepal on Monday evening were felt in Ranchi and other parts of Jharkhand at 6.5pm for a few seconds, frightening people who ran out of offices and marketing complexes for safety.

"It felt like a moderate quake. The water in a bottle on my desk started trembling. I also felt my chair trembling," Abhay Pandey, manager at a private firm in Ranchi, said.

Director meteorological department Ranchi B K Mandal said: "The state has experienced aftershocks of a 5.1 magnitude earthquake which struck Nepal at 6:5pm."

Monday's tremor was the fifth earthquake people in different parts of the state experienced since Saturday. The first tremor was felt on Saturday at 11:43am, within one hour second tremor struck the state. People experienced shocks on Monday afternoon and also at night.

The five tremors causing cracks in several public and private buildings have scared people who live in apprehension of more tremors.
