E-passes to enter govt offices soon

NEW DELHI: Entering central government buildings with manual passes will be a thing of the past. In yet another move to record the details of visitors in every central government building, a web-based scheme will be introduced where visitors will get "high quality" passes. Moreover, visitors can seek appointment online.

Sources said the scheme will be rolled out in all buildings that are managed by the home ministry. "The visitor management module assists in capturing all-relevant information about the visitor and automatically saves it in the database. While this will help avoid the need to re-enter data for regular visitors, in case of need, who all visited frequently and whom all they met can be accessed within seconds," said a government official.

Moreover, the facility to seek an appointment and the official concerned getting the request in advance will help avoid situation of anyone in the reception issuing pass or entering the visitors' logbook without informing the particular official. "The system will be integrated with SMS and email services which help in immediate communication to the visitors for status about visit request approved by the officials to be visited," said another official.

While this is being seen as an IT initiative to facilitate the visitors, the new system can also generate different kinds of reports, which can prove helpful to security agencies and ministries as well.

Already security personnel deployed at different government buildings have been instructed to record details of all visitors entering or exiting office buildings after 6 pm. They are also taking down details of the officials such visitors are meeting.

At present, visitors need to get manual passes from the reception. In majority cases, the personnel at reception calls up the official for his approval to meet the visitor before a pass is issued.
