Babu Bajrangi gets 90-day bail for eye treatment

AHMEDABAD: Gujarat high court on Thursday granted three-month interim bail to Babu Bajrangi, a convict in the 2002 Naroda Patia massacre case, for treatment of his eyes.

A bench of Justice R R Tripathi and Justice R D Kothari ordered Bajrangi's release at the furnishing of a personal bail bond of Rs 5,000. Bajragi had been released for eye treatment earlier also.

Bajrangi's son presented the case and submitted before the court that he was required to be taken to Chennai for treatment. He placed certificates by ophthalmologist Dr Deepak Mehta of MJ Institute of Ophthalmology, Civil Hospital, mentioning that Bajrangi is fast losing his vision.

Another report by eye surgeon Dr Parimal Desai said, "In view of Bajrangi's deteriorated vision in both eyes, he is advised continuous follow-up visit, supervision and treatment at the hands of expert ratinal surgeon, to control diabetes and complete rest. Otherwise, there are chances that he may go blind in both eyes. Right now, he doesn't have useful vision at all in both eyes. This treatment is to stop the progression of disease and not to improve the vision."

Bajrangi was convicted along with 31 others in 2012 for killing 97 persons by a special SIT court. He has been imprisoned till death. Earlier, his wife, Meena, pleaded before the governor for mercy citing her husband's increasing blindness.
