District collector Deependrasingh Khushwah said the identities and locations of all 102 tourists from the city and district had been confirmed and no casualties had been reported so far. "It was earlier told that there were 150 people, but it has been confirmed that the number of people stranded is 102. There were 59 people travelling through the travel agency and are on their way back," he added.
Khushwah said all the tourists were and are on their way back home. Three vehicles of a local travel agency were stopped at border and asked to return after the devastating earthquake on Saturday.
Brijmohan Chaudhary, director at a private travel agency, said the three buses had returned from the border around midnight as per the directions from the government. Efforts were being made to ensure safe return of the tourists stranded at Pashupatinath. "The road along the return route has been damaged and efforts were being made to find a safer alternative to bring them back to Nashik," he added.
Khushwah added that 25 people from a private firm, who had gone by flight, were safe and on their way back. They had reached Gorakhpur and would leave for Kolkata. The members had taken shelter with local MP at Gorakhpur. "They are unable to get flight tickets for the return journey and may come by train or other convenient means of transport," he added.
"All the residents of Nashik are either safely out of Nepal or within 2-3kms of the border and travelling back home. No casualties or case of missing persons has been reported with the district collectorate so far," he said.
He said the administration had not received any reports of city trekkers, who had gone to Nepal. City trekking groups claimed that none of the city or district residents had gone on a trekking expedition in Nepal or Everest.
