Five killed, 16 injured as under construction building collapses in Tamil Nadu

TIRUVARUR: As many as five workers were killed and 16 others were injured when a three-storey under construction building collapsed on the Central University campus at Nagakudi in the Tiruvarur district of Tamil Nadu on Sunday morning.

Around 50 people were working at the site for residential quarters for visiting professors when the building collapsed at 8.45am.


Police, fire and rescue personnel and medical teams Thanjavur and Nagapattinam rushed to the spot and carried out rescue operations. They retrieved the dead bodies and rescued the workers trapped in the debris of building by 12pm.


The Tiruvarur police identified the deceased as Kittu R (26) from Odisha, Shamir Kumar Shetty (32) from Andhra Pradesh, Chinasamy S (36) from Mayiladuthurai, Kumar (27) from Mayiladuthurai and Ram Subash (18) from Odisha. The bodies were sent for postmortem.


All the injured were rushed to Tiruvarur Medical College Hospital for treatment. Five of them were in a serious condition, the police said.


The police booked two engineers of the central public works department, four employees of Hyderabad-based DEC Infrastructure, which is tasked with the construction of the building, and three others.
