Centre to form task force for tourism development, upkeep of heritage in Varanasi

VARANASI: The Centre has decided to form a "task force" that will directly provide all sorts of assistance including financial one for the upkeep of heritage sites and monuments and to boost tourism in Varanasi, Union minister of state for tourism Mahesh Sharma said on Saturday.

He said the results of the task force would be evaluated in three successive stages ? one month, three months and six months of time period.


Sharma, who also the Union minister of state for culture and for civil aviation, said, the task force would be constituted in coordination among his three ministries.


There has already been so much announcements and now it is the time to act upon, so he has decided to form a "task force tomorrow on March 15 in Varanasi that will start its work from the day one", he told reporters.


"Now, we will see its result in the next month on April 15," adding, "in the task force, consisting of government officials, private stakeholders will also be roped in to carry out the work."


Sharma, who arrived here today also spoke at a seminar on the theme of 'Pilgrimage and Spiritual Tourism, Opportunity Abounds Along the Ganga,'.


He said that his focus was on improving the cleanliness, hospitality and the safety aspects of tourism in the country.


During the seminar, an objection over the inclusion of 'hotel industry in pollution norms of the Union government' was raised by the Uttar Pradesh Hotel and Restaurant Association members, on which Sharma assured that "he will look upon this issue and try his best to provide as much relief as he can do for them."


Sharma also said that the hoteliers of Varanasi who are interested in taking the responsibility of cleaning the ghats, will be allotted one or two ghats to each one of them (hoteliers)."


It is to be mentioned that the ghats of Varansi has already been adopted by various social organizations, private and government institutions in Varanasi, and the state governments has more stake in allotting these ghats.
