'Consensual sex after promise of marriage is not rape'

KANNUR: Consensual sex after giving false promise of marriage cannot be considered rape, observed Kerala Women's Commission (KWC). But it definitely amounts to cheating, according to the Women's panel.

Interacting with the media after the mega adalat here on Thursday, KWC member Noorbeena Rasheed said the commission received a few complaints by women that they were cheated promising marriage.

"In such cases, if they engage in consensual sex after the promise of marriage, we cannot term it as rape and only a cheating case can be taken," she said.

The Commission member also said the KWC has limitations in interfering in the cases that are under the consideration of the court.

The panel received 64 complaints, of which 34 complaints were solved at the adalat. Twenty complaints were postponed for the next sitting. Most of the complaints were related to domestic violence and property disputes, said Noorbeena Rasheed. However, this time the intervention of the Commission helped a family that had been separated for long years to reunite again, she added.
