Don't blame Modi for Delhi debacle: Devendra Fadnavis

NASHIK: Maharashtra chief minister Devendra Fadnavis on Wednesday said it would be wrong to blame Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the BJP's humiliating defeat in the Delhi assembly elections.

Fadnavis was reacting to Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackarey's statement blaming Modi for the drubbing that the BJP suffered as it managed to win only three of the 70 seats in the Delhi assembly.

"It is wrong to blame any single leader of a party for losing an election. The BJP has won elections in other states but lost in Delhi. A party in power may win or lose elections at various levels, like panchayat samiti or other local bodies. If the Shiv Sena loses an election, it will not be Uddhav Thackarey's defeat. The BJP would, however, introspect its performance in the Delhi elections," the CM said. "Sena has been our long-time associate, and as an able coalition partner, it should be with us in good times and bad," he added.

Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray had on Tuesday said it would not be wrong to call the results a defeat for Modi. "Talks had been going on about a Modi wave sweeping the country. But the people of Delhi have shown that a tsunami is mightier than a wave. Its a message to those who lord over Delhi," he had said after AAP swept the Delhi assembly elections.

On Modi's visit to Baramati on February 14 and his possible meeting with Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief Sharad Pawar, Fadnavis said, "The PM is visiting the Krishi Vignyan Kendra and is not going to Baramati to meet Sharad Pawar. Though the leader (Pawar) belongs to a rival party and has political differences with the BJP, the two parties would join hands for the sake of development."

The CM said the state government was racing against time to make all preparations for the Kumbh Mela in Nashik beginning in July. He added, "A government ideally needs at least five years to make arrangements for an event of such a huge scale. But the new government got only six months.". Continuous discussions are going on with the sadhus and it would be ensured that all the projects are completed within deadlines."
