Delhi election 2015: What does Delhi verdict mean for political parties

The offices of Congress and BJP on Tuesday wore a deserted look, while festive celebrations marked the Aam Aadmi Party's day of historic triumph.

Halting the Modi juggernaut, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) scored a landslide victory in the Delhi assembly elections by winning as many as 67 of the 70 seats leaving BJP with only three and completely decimating Congress which drew a blank.

Below is an analysis of what the Delhi verdict means for all political parties:

BJP

The first-ever setback for the Narendra Modi-Amit Shah duopoly. They face no challenge, but grumblings, muted so far, may now become audible. The PM will also have to take a few crucial calls, for instance on Hindutva hardliners and equations with media. Winning Bihar becomes the top political priority now.

AAP

The party has not only created electoral history but also emerged as a viable secular challenge to the BJP with a fresh and contemporary appeal. It has shown it can sway sections of Modi supporters and its appeal may now travel beyond Delhi's borders. Already, there's talk of it targeting UP and Punjab.

Congress

This could be the beginning of a life-threatening crisis for Congress, showing that the party's principal asset - the Gandhi family - may be turning into a liability. The room for Rahul Gandhi to be a part-time politician is almost over.
