Rs 1300 crore fund for roads to ‘Char Dham’

HARIDWAR: Nitin Gadakari, Union minister of transport and shipping, announced a financial assistance of Rs 1,300 crore to construct 890 km of roads for Uttarakhand's famous Char Dham yatra.

Construction of a Delhi-Dehradun 4-lane highway, delayed for several years, will also be completed before Ardh Kumbh 2016. Gadkari expressed his concern over condition of roads in the state, particularly those leading to the four famous shrines which attract a large number of pilgrims. He said new highways for these will be constructed with the Centre's grant of Rs 12,273 crore.

Work on these will begin in June or July, he declared. He said the delay in constructing the Delhi-Dehradun 4-lane highway, which began in 2008, was due to the previous government's policy of giving work order for a road without acquisition of required land.
