Pakistan betraying India’s hand of friendship, Rajnath says

NEW DELHI: Union home minister Rajnath Singh on Saturday said Pakistan had failed to reciprocate India's offer of friendship and was instead indulging in repeated ceasefire violations in border areas.

"Pakistan is our neighbouring country and we want good ties with all our neighbouring countries...Pakistan should stop ceasefire violations," Singh told reporters on the sidelines of a BJP event here. He wondered why Pakistani forces were repeatedly indulging in hostilities at the border despite suffering badly due to strong retaliation by the Indian border personnel.

"While we are offering our hand of friendship to Pakistan, it is continuously indulging in ceasefire violations. We made a beginning by inviting Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif at the swearing-in of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who shook hands with him offering not just friendship but also hoping to unite hearts. Despite that, Pakistan is indulging in ceasefire violations repeatedly," said Singh.

When asked about the recent instance of a suspect Pakistani vessel blowing itself up after an hour-long chase by the Indian Coast Guard, averting a 26/11 type attack, the home minister assured that India had taken all necessary steps to strengthen security to prevent a rerun of 26/11 attacks.

"We have strengthened our security on all fronts," he said, adding that security arrangements would be in place as usual for the Republic Day. US President Barack Obama will be the chief guest at the Republic Day parade this year.

Pakistani troops have resorted to heavy mortar shelling and firing on several BSF posts along the Indo-Pak border in Jammu and Kashmir's Samba and Kathua sectors since last night, leaving a woman dead and several injured. Indian border forces have retaliated strongly, taking a cue from the home minister's statement on Friday asking BSF to take appropriate action and give a befitting reply to firing by Pakistan.
