CBI to probe trainee IPS officer drowning incident

HYDERABAD: After four months of persistent efforts by the tragedy-struck family of trainee IPS officer Manu Mukt Manav, who drowned under mysterious circumstances in a swimming pool at the SVP National Police Academy (NPA) in Shivarampalli last August, the Union home ministry has ordered a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) investigation into the incident. The family members suspect foul play in Manav's death.

On August 30, 31-year-old Manav drowned during a party, reportedly after a challenge with his fellow trainee IPS Vishal Sharma on who could swim faster.

When contacted, NPA officials confirmed to TOI that the home ministry has ordered a CBI inquiry into the incident and the communication reached the Academy a few days ago. "A preliminary CBI probe has been ordered into the incident. We have no information when the CBI will start its probe,'' a senior NPA officer said.

Manav's family, who are natives of Haryana, suspected foul play as they claimed Manav was a teetotaler and ruled out the possibility of the youngster drowning as he was an expert swimmer and a member of his university swimming team.

The Rajendranagar police had investigated the incident. Assistant commissioner of police (Rajendranagar) A Muthyam Reddy who was assigned as the investigating officer reportedly concluded that it was a case of drowning and ruled out foul play.

However, Manav's father Ramnivas Manav and other family members demanded a CBI probe to unravel the truth. When contacted, Cyberabad commissioner CV Anand said he had no information about the Union home ministry ordering a CBI probe into the incident. Similarly, Manav's family too claimed they were not informed about the development.
