FM Jaitley is a frustrated minister: TMC

NEW DELHI: The Trinamool Congress on Saturday lashed out at finance minister Arun Jaitley in a counter to his veiled attack on the opposition party, accusing it of creating obstructions in Rajya Sabha and challenging BJP to fight TMC politically.

Soon after Jaitley's attack on his party, TMC spokesperson and Rajya Sabha MP Derek O' Brien tweeted, "BJP should fight us politically. Don't play these dirty games, Mr Jaitley. Don't make it a street-slanging match."

"Mr Jaitley cannot use weekend bytes to try and put a spin to things. Not at all. Not acceptable," O'Brien said referring to Jaitley's comment at a function here on Saturday that a political party, whose members have been allegedly involved in a chit fund scam, is trying to divert attention by creating obstruction in Rajya Sabha. "BJP is now trying to find the villain of the piece and pass the buck on to Trinamool," O' Brien added.

Hitting back at Jaitley for accusing TMC for delaying the insurance bill, O' Brien said, "Mr Jaitley is FM - Frustrated Minister - because he cannot get any bills passed in the Parliament. Mr Jaitley is FM - the Falsehood Minister. We have filed two Privilege Notices against Mr Jaitley - one for misleading the House on the Christmas issue and the other for lying to the House on Saradha case. Paragraph 39 of Supreme Court verdict states that SC has not appointed a monitoring team for CBI probe in the Saradha case."

Speaking at hurriedly called press conference here before leaving for Kolkata, the TMC MP also said, "may be Mr Jaitley has made some promises to his boss, which we are not aware of."

Hitting back at Jaitley for alleging TMC members are involved in the Saradha scam, O'Brien said, "Let us not get into scams because I can also throw mud. Let us bring issues like that of the BCCI into the public domain. Let us see who is in charge and who is pulling strings in the BCCI."

"It is unbecoming of the finance minister, who is also the information & broadcasting minister, to put spins to certain things. Spinning media can help win election campaigns, but governance is serious business," the TMC spokesperson said.

Referring to BJP's Hindutva agenda, O'Brien said, "During the elections BJP had the Modi mask. Now we are getting to know who the real BJP is - is it the suave, articulate lawyer in Delhi, or the bigots in Nagpur, that is RSS."

Challenging the Narendra Modi government and the finance minister the TMC MP said, "Two days of Parliament are still left. If Mr Jaitley thinks he has seen the best of TMC, he is wrong. Mr Finance Minister, do not bulldoze us, we will fight you in the parliamentary democracy."

"The insurance bill is not a reform. It is only being touted as a reform. This is not about TMC. This is about the nation as a whole. We do not need these so-called reforms," O'Brien said, defending his party's stated stand on the bill. He also said, "Nine opposition parties are united. This is not about TMC. This is about the nation as a whole. We do not need these so-called reforms."

"On the floor of Rajya Sabha, political reality is there. BJP should pull up old records and see how they used to disrupt the RS," he said, adding, "Yes, we are for GST. But the way these things are being done is not correct. I raised a question in Rajya Sabha and I repeat it. Were the (state) finance ministers called?' O'Brien said.
