Caste profiling case: Trial to commence against former Gujarat University VC

AHMEDABAD: A sessions court in Mirzapur rural court campus is to start from January 7 the trail against former Gujart University vice-chancellor Parimal Trivedi in a 2008 caste profiling case.

On Friday, the prosecution submitted the list of documents it would be relying upon to prosecute Trivedi. Additional sessions judge, B D Pithva has now kept January 7, 2015 for further proceeding in this case.

Trivedi has been charged for violation of section 3(1)(10) of the Prevention of Atrocities (Prevention) Act, which is invoked when a person intentionally insults or intimidates with intent to humiliate a member of a Scheduled Caste or a Scheduled Tribe in any place within public view.

GLS Arts College faculty member Pankaj shrimali had lodged an FIR on May 3, 2008, against Trivedi for caste slur. The VC moved the high court, but his quashing petition was turned down.

The Gujarat high court provided him relief to the extent that police should not arrest him during the investigation.

After conducting inquiry in this case, cops tried to close the case by filing A Summary without recording Trivedi's statement.

The recommendation to close the case was vehemently opposed by Shrimali on the ground that the cops never tried to contact the accused. The court rejected the summary report and directed further probe.

When nothing happened for more than three years, Shrimali moved the high court again complaining against lethargy on part of investigation team. After Justice J C Upadhyay directed the police to complete the probe within one month and submit final report by February 21, 2012, Trivedi came to be arrested on the day of filing of the report.

He was charge-sheeted in 2012 and the trial was to commence at a city sessions court. However, Trivedi demanded for change of court expressing apprehension that the court looked biased. The HC shifted the trial to the rural court in August 2012.

Last year, charges were framed against Trivedi and the trial is now set to commence in 2015.
