77 Chinese held in Kenya for telecom fraud

BEIJING: China on Friday said 77 of its nationals arrested in Kenya over the past few days may have been involved in telecommunications fraud.

"The case is under investigation at the moment. Initial results show that this probably is a case of telecommunications fraud," foreign ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said at a daily press briefing here.

She said China will actively cooperate with Kenya on related investigations.

She also expressed the hope that Kenya will protect the legal rights of the Chinese nationals and deal with the case in a just and proper way.

According to media reports, Kenyan police have arrested 77 Chinese nationals who were allegedly running an elaborate money laundering and Internet fraud scheme from multiple homes in an upmarket area of the capital, Nairobi.

Police find equipment capable of infiltrating bank accounts and cash machines in the raids.
