Bombay HC quashes 16% reservation for Marathas in Maharashtra

MUMBAI: Bombay high court on Friday stayed Maharashtra government's decision to give 16 per cent reservation to Marathas in public service and educational institutions.

The high court also stayed state govt's decision to provide 5 per cent reservation to Muslims in public service, but allowed them quota in education.


Former chief minister PrithvirajChavan's government had approved the populist proposal ahead of assembly elections.

The Congress-NCP government had in July 2014 promulgated ordinance to provide 16% reservation for Marathas and 5% for Muslims in government jobs and education in Maharashtra.

On June 25, the state cabinet had approved a proposal to provide the reservations.
