Rahul Gandhi tears into PM over Chinese incursion

AURANGABAD: Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday took on the Prime Minister Narendra Modi accusing him of being silent about the Chinese intrusion in Ladakh when the Chinese President Xi Jinping was visiting India last month.

"Our Prime Minister sat on the swing with the Chinese President when thousands of Chinese soldiers entered Indian territory. Why didn't he (the PM) question the Chinese President about it?'' he said at a public meeting in Ausa, about 25 km from Latur district on Wednesday evening.

Gandhi said before the Lok Sabha election, Modi had said he will 'teach China and Pakistan a lesson'. "After becoming the PM, he is silent. Pakistan is firing bullets ... Our people are getting killed.. But not a word (from the PM). It is easy to talk, but difficult to act," he added.

He said the BJP had not acknowledged the work done by successive Congress-led governments and was projecting that a lone man (Modi) could bring about change. "They say nothing has happened in the country in the past 60 years. The fact is that people belonging to all walks of life worked hard, it was not the success of a single leader or a party, it was an united effort. To say that nothing has happened in 60 years is an insult to the common person who has toiled for this country,'' he said.

He promised 24-hour power supply to the state's farmers. "Maharashtra is still number 1 in the state in many fields. It is ahead in the economic sector, education and in health services. The difference is that your (former) chief minister (Prithviraj Chavan) doesn't market his work. They (the BJP) indulge in marketing, splurging money and then talk out about a Gujarat Model," he said. He alleged that the people are suffering while the corporates are making hay.

He spoke of doubling the development works if the Congress is voted to power, promising up to Rs 2.5 lakh assistance under the Rajiv Gandhi Jivandayee Arogya Yojana, free medicines and the biggest textile hub. "We have given (you) a clean chief minister and his functioning would remain transparent," he added.

Gandhi also remembered former chief minister Vilasrao Deshmukh. "When you cast your votes, remember Vilasrao,'' he said. Deshmukh is from Latur. Chavan and sitting MLA Basavraj Patil Murumkar, who will contest the poll, were present.
