The 39-year-old star was presented with the insignia of an Honorary Dame Grand Cross of the Most Distinguished Order of St Michael and St George on Friday.
The investiture took place during a private audience at Buckingham Palace.
She has become the first Hollywood super star to get the royal recognition.
Jolie along with Britain's former foreign minister William Hague hosted the world's biggest summit against rape as a weapon of war in London recently.
The 39-year-old Oscar winner is now a dame commander of the order of St Michael and St George.
Because she is not a British or Commonwealth citizen, Jolie won't be entitled to use the title dame before her name.
Jolie, who is UN special envoy for refugees, said of the award "To receive an honour related to foreign policy means a great deal to me as it is what I wish to dedicate my working life to. Working with survivors of rape is an honour in itself. I know that succeeding in our goals will take a lifetime and I am dedicated to it for all of mine".
While opening the London summit, Jolie said "We are here for the nine-year old girl in Uganda, kidnapped and forced into sexual slavery. We are here for the man in Bosnia, years after rape still stigmatised, unable to earn enough money to buy bread for his family. We are here for all the forgotten, hidden survivors who have been made to feel ashamed, or been abandoned, and for the children of rape. We want the whole world to hear their stories, and understand that this injustice cannot be tolerated, and that sorrow and compassion are not enough".
"Our outrage does not help the woman who walks into her attacker on the street - free as a bird, free to abuse others, because of this global culture of impunity. Warzone rape is a preventable crime. So our response must never again be that these things simply happen," Jolie added.
Jolie's investiture follows her recent marriage to her actor partner Brad Pitt, with whom she has six children. Last year she revealed she had chosen to have a double mastectomy after discovering she had an 86% chance of developing breast cancer.
