The award has been declared at an international conference held in West Virginia, USA. Tobacco Board is the only government organisation to get the award since its inception. Tobacco board chairman Dr K Gopal, who participated in the Global Tobacco Networking Forum (GTNF) meeting held at Washington DC and West Virginia, USA, received the Golden Leaf award.
An overwhelming Dr.Gopal has said that he would dedicate the award to 89,507 flue-cured Virginia (FCV) tobacco growers and their family members involved in production of FCV tobacco in India. He said that the international award is recognition of board's various initiatives relating to extension activities, Good Agricultural Practices (GAP), elimination of Non Tobacco Related Material (NTRM) and elimination of pesticide residues.
He said that the board had also initiated series of measures for achieving sustainability in this sector by addressing various contemporary issues. He said that implementation of electronic auction (E-Auction) system for achieving high transparency and accountability in sale of tobacco leaf in 30 auction platforms in AP and Karnataka and other associated reforms initiated by the Board caught the attention of global customers and organisers.
